Gapped Plank Deck Covered in OSB on Pamona Dr, Beavercreek

Wind damaged this Beavercreek roof. Its spaced plank sheathing had gaps over a quarter inch, so we covered it with new OSB, then roofed the house and garage. Every photograph below is our own.

About this project

The homeowner called us about wind damage to the roof. This was not an insurance claim.

Why it mattered

The house had spaced plank sheathing: boards laid with gaps of more than a quarter inch between them. Ohio's residential code says asphalt shingles "shall be fastened to solidly sheathed decks" (Residential Code of Ohio, section R905.2.1), and Owens Corning's Duration installation instructions call for "Minimum 6 inch roof deck boards, minimum 3/8 inch plywood, minimum 7/16 inch OSB sheathing spaced minimum 1/8 inch and maximum 1/4 inch" (Pub. 10014283-L, July 2026), so the deck had to be covered.

The detached garage already had OSB decking, but it had a leak.

What we did

Before tear-off, we covered the landscaping with tarps.

On the house, we covered the spaced planks with new OSB sheathing.

On the garage, we cleaned the deck and replaced a couple of boards.

We installed ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment and Owens Corning Duration shingles on both roofs, and new chimney flashing on the house.
