Wind Damage Roof Repair in Dayton, Ohio

Wind damages a roof by breaking the seal that holds each shingle down. Once a shingle comes unsealed, it flaps in the wind, which creases it and knocks the granules loose, leaving the asphalt underneath exposed. Very high winds can tear shingles off completely. A shingle that has been unsealed or creased no longer lies flat, so water from the next storm can get in under it. If wind has hit your roof, stay off it, take photos from the ground, and call us at 937-215-8663. We inspect your roof at no cost and photograph every damaged shingle we find.

What does wind damage look like on a roof?

You'll usually see one of three things:

  • Missing shingles. A bare strip or a dark patch where a shingle tab used to be. You may find the pieces in your yard.
  • Creased shingles. A straight line across the tab where the wind bent the shingle back and knocked the granules loose. The crease is often hard to see from the ground.
  • Lifted shingles. Tabs that have come loose from the shingle below and flap in the next breeze. That flapping knocks off the granules, which protect the asphalt and give the shingle its color. Once they're gone, the sun breaks down the bare asphalt, and in time you'll find that shingle in your yard.

We start on the ground, walk the whole property, then get on the roof. Wind damage is often spread across a slope, so we check every slope, not only the one you can see.

How strong does wind have to be to damage a roof?

The National Weather Service calls a thunderstorm severe when it brings winds of 58 mph or more (opens in a new tab). Storms like that aren't rare here. From 2016 through 2025, the National Weather Service recorded 180 severe thunderstorm wind reports on 70 different days (opens in a new tab) in Montgomery County.

What should I do if wind blew shingles off my roof?

Stay off the roof, take photos from the ground of the missing shingles and any pieces in the yard, and write down the date of the storm. If water is coming in, call us at 937-215-8663 and we'll install an emergency tarp to stop further damage. Your policy requires you to take reasonable steps to protect your home after a storm, and a tarp does that. We fasten tarps with furring strips and screws so they hold while your claim is worked out.

Does homeowners insurance cover wind damage to a roof?

Wind is one of the covered perils on a homeowners policy. Policies generally don't cover age, wear or a roof that was installed wrong. Your insurance company decides what's covered, and nobody can promise a claim will be paid.

Here's what we do:

  1. We inspect your whole property and photograph the damage.
  2. You call your insurance company or agent and report it.
  3. We meet your adjuster at your home and show them everything we found.
  4. We go through the adjuster's estimate with you line by line and send your insurer the documentation for anything that was left off.

Once your claim is approved, you pay your deductible, and we build your roof to the Helping Hands Roofing Standard. Our goal is that your out-of-pocket expense for the claim work doesn't exceed your deductible.

Can wind damage be repaired, or does the roof need replacing?

It depends on how much of the roof the wind reached and whether matching shingles can still be found. We don't patch single shingles. When a repair is the right answer, we rebuild the whole elevation that's leaking, and that work carries our Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. When the damage runs across the roof, or your shingle is no longer made, your adjuster may write the roof for replacement. When new shingles won't match, Ohio's rule for property claims says the insurer replaces as much as it takes to give a "reasonably comparable appearance" (Ohio Administrative Code 3901-1-54 (opens in a new tab)). We explain it on our storm damage page.

Aub and his team did a great job with our new roof install. He made sure we were set for the winter and then installed as soon as possible in the spring for best results. Helping Hands also worked directly with our insurance, which was a huge help!

I would absolutely recommend Helping Hands to anyone. They did a great job replacing my roof and downspouts. I appreciate the amount of work that they put into helping me with my insurance company and how much they cared about me. They helped with things I'm quite sure other companies wouldn't have cared about. In the end, when my insurance company wouldn't budge, they made sure I was taken care of. Thank you for everything.

We recently had our roof replaced and couldn’t be happier with the experience. The pricing was very fair and competitive, which immediately set them apart There were no hidden charges or upsells, I paid exactly what I was expecting. Aub was incredibly helpful throughout the entire process—always quick to respond to any questions and made everything easy to understand. The crew did an excellent job on the installation, and cleanup. They left the area spotless, which we really appreciated. Overall, a smooth, professional experience from start to finish. Highly recommend!
