Move what you can out from under the leak and put a bucket under it. Stay off the roof.
If a tree or a limb is on the roof, we contact the tree service we work with. They remove the tree first, and then we tarp the roof.
Emergency roof repair starts with a tarp
A tarp is a temporary, protective measure, not a repair. Its only job is to stop water from getting into the house through exposed decking while the actual scope of damage is assessed and the right fix (repair or replacement) is planned without the added pressure of active water intrusion.
A tarp buys time. It does not answer what the storm actually did to the roof, and that is the question that decides the permanent fix. That assessment is storm damage roofing, and it happens once the water is stopped.

How we do it
How we tarp a roof
We fasten the tarp with furring strips and screws so it holds through more wind and rain while your claim is worked out and the repair is scheduled. If anything happens to the tarp in that time, we come back and repair it or install another one.

A tarp is temporary: what happens next
Fastened this way, a tarp can last up to a year. It is still temporary. Once the water is stopped, we inspect the roof and document the damage. If it is storm damage, you open the claim with your insurance company and we meet your adjuster at your home. Then the roof is repaired or replaced.

The Ohio Department of Insurance (opens in a new tab) tells homeowners to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage after a storm, and says insurers typically reimburse those temporary repairs as part of the claim. What your insurance company pays is its decision. We photograph the damage and the tarp, so it's on record for your claim.
