About this project

Wind damaged this Dayton roof. We found creased shingles, flipped up where the wind had caught them.

The claim

The insurance company didn't cover a full roof at first. We documented the damage for several months.

We sent a shingle for an ITEL test, which looks for a matching shingle still on the market. We laid the closest matches on the roof and they didn't blend in. The original shingles have a gray accent across the top, and the new ones are black.

The insurance company then covered a full replacement of the house roof and the shed roof.

Why it mattered

After tear-off, we found deck boards where water had been getting in, and we replaced them.

This house has a 25-inch overhang. Ohio's residential code says the ice barrier must "extend from the lowest edges of all roof surfaces to a point not less than 24 inches (610 mm) inside the exterior wall line of the building" (Residential Code of Ohio, section R905.1.2), so one row at the eaves would not have been enough here.

What we did

We protected the property with tarps before the tear-off.

We tore the old roof off down to the deck and cleaned the deck.

We built both roofs to the Helping Hands Roofing Standard: two rows of ice and water shield at the eaves, ice and water shield up the sidewalls before the step flashing, and a double layer of synthetic underlayment with a 24-inch overlap.

We installed Owens Corning Duration shingles in Brownwood and finished the chimney flashing.

Materials and system used: Owens Corning Duration shingles (Brownwood), ice and water shield (two rows at the eaves, up the sidewalls), double layer of synthetic underlayment with a 24-inch overlap
