About this project

The house had an old three-tab roof with wind damage. Under it were two more layers of shingles, three in all.

What we found

Wind had creased shingles on both the house and the garage.

The insurance company covered a full replacement of both roofs, and new sheathing on the house.

Why it mattered

With three layers on it, the tear-off was a mess. Ohio's residential code lists when a new roof may not go over an old one, including "Where the existing roof has two or more applications of any type of roof covering" (Residential Code of Ohio, section R908.3.1.1), so all three had to come off.

Underneath, the house's plywood sheathing was delaminating: the layers were coming apart and pulling off with the shingles.

Owens Corning's Duration installation instructions call for "minimum 3/8 inch plywood" (Pub. 10014283-L, July 2026). We measured these boards, and they were too thin.

The box that looked like a chimney was only a cover over the furnace vent.

What we did

We tore off all three layers, removed the old sheathing on the house, and resheeted it with new OSB.

On the garage, we replaced sheathing only where it needed it.

We installed ice and water shield at the eaves, RhinoRoof synthetic underlayment and Owens Corning Duration shingles on both roofs.

We removed the fake chimney box, known as a faux chimney, and painted the furnace vent.

Materials and system used: new OSB sheathing on the house, ice and water shield at the eaves, RhinoRoof synthetic underlayment, Owens Corning Duration shingles
