About this project
Every time it rained, the gutter across the front porch of this house on Blocker Dr in Rosewood Gardens overflowed. Water poured over the top, collected along the foundation, and came into the basement.
Why it mattered
Two problems were working together. The gutter along the side of the house emptied into the front porch gutter, so the front run was carrying its own water plus the side's.
The front gutter was also too small for the amount of water coming off the front of the roof. In a hard rain it could not keep up, and it spilled over the front edge.
What we did
We replaced the front gutter with a 6-inch seamless aluminum gutter, sized for the water it has to carry. We installed new 5-inch seamless gutters on the rest of the house.
We installed stainless steel micro-mesh gutter guards on the new gutters. The back edge slides under the first row of shingles and the front screws to the gutter, so nothing is nailed into the roof.
Why we did it that way
A bigger gutter on the front alone fixes the overflow at its source, without upsizing the whole house. The guards keep leaves and seeds from clogging the new system, so it holds the water it was built for. The overflow has stopped, and the basement has stayed dry.
