Every roof Helping Hands Roofing replaces gets Owens Corning Duration shingles, installed as one Owens Corning system: Duration shingles, Owens Corning starter shingles, ProEdge hip and ridge caps, RhinoRoof synthetic underlayment and RhinoRoof Granulated ice and water shield. We don't mix brands on a roof. Here is what Duration is, how it compares, what the warranty covers, and how we install it in Dayton.

From the field

What we found: Owens Corning's own warranty excludes "improper or faulty installation", so how a shingle goes on matters as much as which shingle it is.

Why it mattered: A good shingle on a poorly built roof can still leak, and the warranty won't cover it.

What we recommend: Ask every roofer which shingle they install, which parts of the roof come from the same maker, and how many nails go in each shingle.

Why: Owens Corning ties its 25-year algae coverage to its own hip and ridge caps, and its higher wind coverage to its own starter, underlayment and ice and water barrier.

What this means for you: Every roof we replace is a full Owens Corning Duration system, built to The Helping Hands Roofing Standard.

Is Owens Corning Duration a good shingle?

Yes. Duration is an architectural shingle built with what Owens Corning calls SureNail Technology, a fabric strip in the nailing area that gives the nails more to grip. Owens Corning backs it with its Limited Lifetime warranty, a 130 mph wind warranty and 25 years of algae resistance when Owens Corning hip and ridge caps are used. We use ProEdge caps on every roof, so our roofs qualify for the full 25 years. Owens Corning's higher 160 mph wind coverage also calls for its starter shingles on the eaves and rakes, its hip and ridge caps, its synthetic underlayment and its ice and water barrier, installed to its enhanced wind instructions. Every one of those products goes on our roofs.

Architectural or 3-tab shingles: which is better?

Architectural shingles have a dimensional look; 3-tab shingles are flat. The bigger difference is in Owens Corning's own warranty: its Duration architectural shingle carries a Limited Lifetime warranty, 130 mph wind protection and a 10-year TRU PROtection period, while its Supreme 3-tab shingle carries 25 years, 60 mph and 5 years. We install architectural shingles only.

How do we install Duration shingles in Dayton?

A shingle is only as good as the roof under it. Owens Corning's warranty excludes "improper or faulty installation", and installation must follow its written instructions and local building code. Code sets the minimum. We build past it. It's the part of the roof you'll never see:

  • Two rows of ice and water shield on the eaves.
  • One row of ice and water shield in the valleys.
  • Ice and water shield up every roof-to-wall transition before the step flashing goes in, and around all protrusions.
  • Ice and water shield under 24-inch metal coil flashing at every change in slope.
  • A double layer of synthetic underlayment with a 24-inch overlap.

Every shingle gets six nails, placed in the SureNail strip. Code asks for four (opens in a new tab). That's The Helping Hands Roofing Standard.

What warranty comes with Duration shingles?

Duration comes with Owens Corning's Standard Product Limited Lifetime Warranty (opens in a new tab), for as long as you own the home. For the first 10 years, Owens Corning covers the cost to repair or replace defective shingles, including labor. After that, coverage is prorated. It does not cover tear-off or disposal, and it does not cover workmanship. Our Lifetime Workmanship Warranty covers our work.

Does the warranty transfer if I sell my home?

Yes, one time. The buyer has to contact Owens Corning within 60 days of the sale, and Owens Corning may charge a transfer fee. If the home sells within the first 10 years, the new owner keeps the rest of that coverage. After that, the new owner's coverage drops to 2 years. The wind and algae coverage transfer in full.

How do I make a warranty claim?

Contact Owens Corning within 30 days of finding the problem. It may ask for photos or shingle samples and may inspect the roof. If the shingles are repaired or replaced before Owens Corning makes its decision, the claim can be denied.

What causes black streaks on a roof?

Those dark streaks are algae. Owens Corning's warranty names it: Gloeocapsa magma, a blue-green algae that leaves brown-black stains. Duration's StreakGuard algae resistance is covered for 25 years when Owens Corning hip and ridge caps are used, which is why ProEdge caps go on every roof we build. The coverage does not include mold, lichen or green algae.

Can Duration shingles be installed in cold weather?

They can, with care, but they may not seal right away. Duration shingles have a sealant strip that needs several days of direct, warm sunlight to seal. Owens Corning's warranty says a roof installed in cool weather may not seal until the weather warms, and it does not cover blow-offs that happen before the shingles seal. Owens Corning also asks for extra care at 40 degrees or colder. That's why we replace roofs in winter only when it can't wait.

What Duration colors do Dayton homeowners pick?

Driftwood was the Duration color we installed most from January to July 2025, followed by Brownwood and Peppercorn. Those months also included Colonial Slate, Desert Rose, Slatestone and Sierra Gray. Owens Corning shows every Duration color on its product page (opens in a new tab).

Is Duration a 30-year shingle?

No. Owens Corning lists Duration with a Limited Lifetime warranty, not a set number of years. How long a roof actually lasts depends on how it's installed and ventilated: a properly installed roof lasts 20 to 40 years.
